In 2019, Agrigento engaged Dr Gillian Howell as Research Consultant to lead our survey of 13 practitioners, researchers, and practitioner-researchers from the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Scandinavia, and Sri Lanka. The survey elicited rich insights into the features of exemplary practitioners and programs. It also brought to light common challenges and obstacles, pointing to gaps in knowledge and practice in the field. We will continue to gather such knowledge to shape and direct our work into the future.

Agrigento provides grants in support of initiatives that respond to important or urgent issues in the field of music as social action. This work involves a community of people who are committed to using participatory music making toward positive social outcomes, and ready to think critically and reflexively about the ambiguities, complexities and uncertainties involved. Our hope is that these initiatives will help to improve the design and pedagogies of music as social action programs and the preparation of practitioners for this work.
